Breast Cancer Screening/Mammograms

Breast cancer is the second highest cause of cancer death in women. Nearly one in every eight women will develop breast cancer in her life. That is why doctors urge women to do follow the three-step approach to detecting breast cancer:

1. Annual Clinical Exams (with your physician)
2. Monthly Breast Self Exams
3. Regular Mammography Screenings

Breast cancer may first be detected as a lump that can be felt, but not seen. If you find a lump in your breast, your doctor may recommend that you have a mammogram. Mammography is currently your best tool to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, even before it can be felt. Mammography screening for breast cancer is especially important for women in risk groups. These include women over 50 years, women who have had no children or a first child after the age of 30, and women who have had a close relative diagnosed with breast cancer. Women between the ages of 40 and 50 should have a mammogram every one to two years. After age 50, the guidelines call for a mammogram once a year. The cure rate for breast cancer is about 92% when detected and treated in its early stages.
